It\u2019s probably not enough, as one recent <b>email marketing<\/b> survey showed that every word in the headline of your email can have a significant impact on if the recipient opens it. A leading <b>email marketing<\/b> company analyzed 24 billion emails delivered with 22,000 distinct words in the headline. The results showed that:<\/p>\n<p><b>Personalization Is Important. <\/b>Using a template or macro to automatically include the name of the recipient meant that it was far more likely that they would open the email. This was true for just using the first name or the last name, but the open rates were two to four times higher if both the first and last names were used.<\/p>\n<p><b>Time Sensitivity Drives Open Rates. <\/b>When emails used terms like \u201curgent,\u201d \u201cbreaking\u201d or \u201cimportant\u201d that implied a time sensitivity, open rates increased significantly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.evisible.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/great-email-headlines.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-255\" alt=\"great-email-headlines\" src=\"https:\/\/www.evisible.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/great-email-headlines-300x300.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.evisible.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/great-email-headlines-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.evisible.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/great-email-headlines-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.evisible.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/great-email-headlines-80x80.jpg 80w, https:\/\/www.evisible.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/great-email-headlines-30x30.jpg 30w, https:\/\/www.evisible.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/great-email-headlines-20x20.jpg 20w, https:\/\/www.evisible.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/great-email-headlines.jpg 520w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Free Isn\u2019t the Perfect Solution. <\/b>Many <b>email marketing<\/b> experts assume that including the word \u201cfree\u201d in any email will entice people to open. While it\u2019s true to a small degree overall, in some industries such as travel and transportation, real estate and medical, using \u201cfree\u201d actually reduced open rates. Interestingly, the word \u201cfreebie\u201d appeared to be much more powerful than \u201cfree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Donation Requests Get Ignored. <\/b>Words directly associated with charity such as \u201cdonation\u201d or \u201cfundraiser\u201d caused open rates to fall dramatically. More ambiguous words such as \u201chelping\u201d also reduced open rates but only by a minor amount.<\/p>\n<p><b>Announce Things to People But Don\u2019t Remind People. <\/b>When a headline \u201cannounced\u201d something or \u201cinvited\u201d someone to do something, open rates were high. They fell when the email \u201creminded\u201d a person of something. It was even worse if the email threatened the reader with \u201ccancellation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Word Pairs Matter. <\/b>Some combinations of phrases, such as \u201cThank You,\u201d made open rates go up. Other word pairs weren\u2019t so powerful. Phrases such as \u201csign up\u201d and \u201clast chance\u201d made open rates plummet.<\/p>\n<p><b>Capitalization Can Help. <\/b>One of the quirkiest findings of the research was that the capitalization of the email headline appears to have a correlation with open rates.
